Woman Left with Swollen Lip After Centipede Bites Her in Sleep

A 21-year-old woman from Sรฃo Vicente, Brazil, was left with painfully swollen lips after a centipede crawled onto her face and bit her in the middle of the night.

Nataly Galdino said she woke up in โ€œunbearable painโ€ and ended up spending two days in the hospital recovering from the venomous bite.

Sharing the ordeal on Instagram, Nataly wrote:

โ€œI was sleeping and, in the middle of the night, I felt something prick my upper lip. I saw it was stuck to my blanket and its claw was in my mouth. But it was dark, so all I did was pull.โ€

She struggled for five seconds trying to remove whatever was stuck to her lip. When she finally turned on the light, she was shocked โ€” her mouth was bleeding, and a centipede lay on the floor nearby.

Although centipede venom is typically not fatal to humans, Nataly was especially worried due to the location of the bite โ€” right on her lips. She also experienced shortness of breath, which prompted her to seek immediate medical attention.

โ€œMy mouth immediately started to swell and I ran to the hospital,โ€ she said. โ€œThey gave me medication for pain and allergies.โ€

After treatment, she returned home and spent two days recovering as the swelling gradually went down.

The bite left her temporarily with what she jokingly called โ€œAngelina Jolie lipsโ€ โ€” but the experience was anything but glamorous.

โ€œIt was nerve-racking. I didnโ€™t know much about centipedes, if their venom was poisonous, or if I was going to die,โ€ Nataly admitted.

Following the incident, she urged others to be more aware of the types of creatures that can lurk inside the home, especially in humid environments where centipedes thrive.

โ€œPay attention to your surroundings. I hope no one else has to go through something like this,โ€ she warned.
