The fatal incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, July 16, 2023, near the rural area of Sítio Piripiri, between the municipalities of Caririaçu and Juazeiro do Norte

The victims have been identified as Hérida Nascimento da Silva, Sebastião Cícero Gomes, and their 3-year-old son, Miguel Nascimento Gomes.

The family, residents of Várzea Alegre, had been en route to Juazeiro do Norte, a journey that typically takes about one hour under normal conditions. They were reportedly traveling for a scheduled medical appointment for young Miguel.
