Donald Trump Gets More Bad News…

WASHINGTON — The federal criminal prosecution accusing Donald Trump of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election reached an abrupt, historic conclusion without a jury verdict, closing the book on an unprecedented legal confrontation while leaving behind a landmark Supreme Court doctrine that fundamentally expanded executive immunity.

Brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith in August 2023, the four-count indictment charged the former president with conspiracies to defraud the United States, obstruct the congressional certification of the electoral vote, and disenfranchise millions of voters. Trump entered a plea of not guilty and consistently framed the case as a weaponization of the Department of Justice aimed at derailing his political comeback.

The prosecution ultimately dissolved without an acquittal or a judicial determination of guilt. Instead, the case was brought to a halt by the convergence of a transformative Supreme Court ruling and Trump’s triumph in the November 2024 presidential election.
