TV host slammed for misgendering Sam Smith multiple times on show

In 2019, Sam Smith announced they were ending their war with gender and embracing the pronouns they/them. Despite the bold public declaration, the โ€œMan I Amโ€ singer is still routinely misgendered, and referred to as โ€œthat fella.โ€

โ€œToday is a good day so here goes,โ€ Smith wrote in a public statement on X. โ€œIโ€™ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM. after a lifetime of being at war with my gender Iโ€™ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and outโ€ฆโ€

He added, โ€œI understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.โ€

โ€˜Ridiculousโ€™
Then, on ITVโ€™s This Morning, 74-year-old Bob Geldof was slammed for repeatedly referring to the non-binary singer as โ€œhe,โ€ instead of their chosen pronouns, prompting backlash from viewers.

Former hosts Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield did not correct the error during the broadcast.

โ€œHolly and Phil should have pulled him up on that. Ridiculous,โ€ one person fired, per the Mirror.

โ€œHeโ€™s on national TV and speaking about Sam Smith. Youโ€™d think someone would brief him on Samโ€™s gender identity or at least correct him. Painful watch,โ€ another shared.

Meanwhile, another said: โ€œGive all those โ€˜Best Maleโ€™ awards you won and [profited] from back and we will talk, Sam.โ€

โ€˜That fellaโ€™
More recently, TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has come under fire for misgendering Smith during a segment on her talk show. While discussing the singerโ€™s red-carpet appearance at the Barbie movie premiere with guest Vogue Williams, Kelly referred to Smith multiple times using male pronouns.

โ€œItโ€™s a bit big for him,โ€ Smith said. โ€œIf he was my son, Iโ€™d be saying, โ€˜Son, thatโ€™s too big for youโ€™โ€ฆ Heโ€™s going to stand out. He knows what heโ€™s doing, does that fella.โ€

Williams, in contrast, used Smithโ€™s correct pronouns, stating that they would โ€œcertainly stand out on the red carpet.โ€

โ€˜Heโ€™s a blokeโ€™
Fans online reacted quickly, criticizing Kelly for disregarding Smithโ€™s identity.

โ€œNot Lorraine misgendering Sam Smith over and over!!โ€ one user wrote, as reported by The Independent. Another added: โ€œI guess Lorraine didnโ€™t get the memo about Sam Smith and their chosen pronouns, awkward.โ€

Others, however, said โ€œ[Kelly] fell into the trap of thinking heโ€™s a bloke because he is.โ€

โ€œHow can you misgender someone that is obviously a man?โ€ a second tweeted.

A third joked, โ€œWhat a bigot, she knows they are not a he but a chubby them or theyโ€ฆI forgot what we were talking about.โ€

โ€˜Everyone messes upโ€™
In a conversation with Apple Musicโ€™s Zane Lowe, Smith explained what the pronoun change has meant for them. โ€œSince changing my pronouns, it felt like a coming home,โ€ they said, according to the Independent. โ€œI wish I knew what the words were when I was in school, because I wouldโ€™ve identified as that in school. Because it is who I am and itโ€™s who Iโ€™ve always been.โ€

Acknowledging the complexity of adjusting language habits, both for others and for themselves, they added: โ€œWhatโ€™s hard is people changing their vocabulary; thatโ€™s very, very difficult. It takes time. Everyone messes up. Iโ€™m going to be misgendered to the day I die.โ€

They added, โ€œThis is all about feeling safe, and it makes me feel happy and it makes me feel comfortable. And if I get to live a life where Iโ€™m a little bit more comfortable and happy, then I think itโ€™s worth it.โ€
