After thirty years of marriage, I asked my husband for a divorce. He was completely blindsided. To Zack, our life together was stable and good. He thought he had done everything right. He had never cheated. He didn\u2019t drink or gamble. He worked hard, paid the bills, and thought that was enough. But I saw things differently.<\/p>\n
We had just celebrated our thirtieth wedding anniversary. Our youngest had moved out two weeks earlier, and I was finally alone with my thoughts\u2014no distractions, no responsibilities outside of myself. That morning, I told Zack I wanted a divorce.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said again, gently but firmly.<\/p>\n
Tears filled his eyes. \u201cBut why? I\u2019ve always loved you. I\u2019ve never cheated on you, not once!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know,\u201d I said. \u201cThat\u2019s true. But that\u2019s not the point.\u201d<\/p>\n
Confused and hurt, he demanded an explanation. \u201cI did nothing wrong! Why are you doing this? Are you seeing someone else?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. I\u2019m not,\u201d I said. \u201cBut if you really want to know why I\u2019m leaving\u2026 it\u2019s because you did nothing. And that\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
My children were shocked. Amy, my eldest, told me her father was heartbroken and seeing a therapist. I felt for him\u2014I truly did\u2014but I was finally putting myself first.
