A photo, clip, or screenshot attached to a post does not prove when or where an event occurred. Old footage can be relabeled. Generic chaos can be given a new caption. Synthetic images can look convincing. The rumor travels so fast in part because real violence around Trump is not theoretical. On July 13, 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a rooftop during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A bullet struck Trump\u2019s ear. Rallygoer Corey Comperatore was killed; two others were seriously wounded. A Secret Service counter-sniper killed Crooks. The FBI treated the shooting as an assassination attempt.
